Sci-GaIA  ( Energising Scientific Endeavour though Science Gateways and e-Infrastructures in Africa)

proposes to produce clearly structured guides and educational documents that can be used to train and support representatives of National Research and Education Networks(NRENs),Communities of Practise(CoPs) and , Importantly Universities to delevope Science Gateways and e-Infrastructure in Africa. This will give a sustainnable foundation on which African e-Infrastructures can be developed. Importantly, the results of Sci-GaIA will be usable by CoPs in Europe and the rest of the world. Here are some of Tanzania champions participanted in the Sci-GaIA.

Objectives;

  1. Promote the uptake of Science Gateways and e-Ifrastructures in Africa and beyond.
  2. Stenghten and expand Science Gateways and e-Infrastructure related service.
  3. support new and already emerging Communities of Practice.
  4. Train, disseeminate ,Communicate and Outreach.

Use Case Description

Integration of WRF in a Science Gateway:

The use case aims at integrating the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) in a Science Gateway to be (primarily) used by the WIMEA-ICT project and exploiting the High Performance Computing (HPC) resources at the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology. Weather information is vital for decision making in various domains, such as agriculture, disaster management, aviation, fishing, energy, mining, construction, defense, water resources, health, etc., and WRF is a next-generation mesoscale numerical weather prediction system designed for both atmospheric research and operational forecasting needs . I am an Assistant Lecturer in the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department, at the University of Dar-es-Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania. Currently, and I am a PhD student doing research in using smart grid technologies to design and implement more efficient autonomous solar-driven microgrids for off-grid rural communities. My other research and consultancy activities are focused on analyzing ICT systems security, and using Mobile technologies to design Mobile applications for educational and financial use-cases.

The use case aims at developing a Science Gateway for the iGrid project, which aims at deploying a Smart Grid in rural areas of Tanzania to drive capacity development and enhancement.

Integration of the Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA) collection of machine learning algorithms for data mining tasks in a Science Gateway.
